FORME DE COMUNICARE ÎN PIESELE LUI BRIAN FRIEL

Ioana Mohor-Ivan

Abstract

Starting from an outline of pragmatics of human interaction such as the model produced by
the Palo Alto school provides, the paper focuses on three of the best-known plays written by the contemporary
Irish playwright Brian Friel, namely Faith Healer, The Communication Cord and Dancing at Lughnasa, in
order to prove that communication is their common concern. Nevertheless, the plays surveyed are illustrative for
Friel’s concern to enlarge his communicational strategies, so as to include ritual and dance alongside language
as powerful mechanisms of interpersonal communication.
